What is Nitrazepam 5 mg?
Nitrazepam can shorten the time taken to fall asleep and extend sleep. It does not treat the underlying cause of insomnia.
Use only as prescribed for you. The strength printed on the box is not a recommended dose; follow your own prescription and the leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Take only the bedtime dose directed by your prescriber. Treatment should be brief, with a plan to finish it. Allow time for an uninterrupted night of sleep.
Before taking it
Breathing disorders, sleep apnoea, severe liver disease and myasthenia gravis can make nitrazepam unsuitable. Older people are more vulnerable to falls.
- Dependence and withdrawal can occur. Do not stop suddenly; agree a stopping plan with your prescriber.
- Avoid alcohol. Discuss breathing problems, other sedating medicines and the risk of falls with your prescriber.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about other medicines, health conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding before treatment.
Other medicines and interactions
Opioid painkillers, other sedatives and alcohol can dangerously increase its sedating effects. Have your medicines checked before combining them.
Possible side effects
Drowsiness, reduced alertness, dizziness and muscle weakness can occur.
This is a short overview, not a full list. Read your pack’s patient leaflet and speak to a pharmacist about any concerns.
Common questions
Can it affect me the next morning?
Yes. Reduced alertness or muscle weakness may continue after waking. Avoid driving or machinery while affected.
Why is a stopping plan needed?
Abrupt stopping may cause withdrawal or a return of sleep problems. Your prescriber can arrange a gradual reduction.
