UNDERSTANDING YOUR MEDICINE

What is Diazepam 10 mg?

The reason for treatment determines how diazepam is prescribed. For anxiety it is used for short periods; longer use can cause dependence.

Use only as prescribed for you. The strength printed on the box is not a recommended dose; follow your own prescription and the leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Taking this medicine

Swallow prescribed tablets with water, with or without food. Timing depends on the reason for treatment. Anxiety treatment is generally limited to a short course.

Before taking it

Discuss breathing, liver, kidney or heart conditions and any history of substance dependence before starting.

  • Do not stop suddenly. Your prescriber can advise on a gradual reduction.
  • Avoid alcohol and check other medicines with a pharmacist. Do not drive if drowsy or less alert.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about other medicines, health conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding before treatment.

Other medicines and interactions

Sedating antihistamines, antidepressants and antipsychotics need checking. Avoid grapefruit juice as well as alcohol, because side effects can increase.

Possible side effects

Sleepiness, tiredness and reduced alertness can occur.

This is a short overview, not a full list. Read your pack’s patient leaflet and speak to a pharmacist about any concerns.

Common questions

What if I miss a dose?

Skip it and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not double up.

Are the 5 mg and 10 mg tablets interchangeable?

They contain different amounts of diazepam. Follow the strength and directions on your prescription; ask a pharmacist before changing tablets.
