What is Co-codamol 30/500 mg?
The photographed 30/500 strength contains 30 mg codeine phosphate and 500 mg paracetamol per tablet. This higher strength requires a prescription.
Use only as prescribed for you. The strength printed on the box is not a recommended dose; follow your own prescription and the leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Swallow tablets whole with water, with or without food. Follow the prescribed spacing and maximum amount. The 30/500 strength is different from lower-strength pharmacy products.
Before taking it
Discuss how long pain treatment is needed. Regular use of the codeine component may require a gradual reduction when treatment ends.
- Do not combine with other paracetamol-containing medicines without professional advice.
- Codeine can cause dependence. Do not increase the prescribed dose.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about other medicines, health conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding before treatment.
Other medicines and interactions
Check cold-and-flu remedies and other painkillers for paracetamol or codeine. Taking duplicate ingredients can cause an overdose. Ask a pharmacist before adding another pain medicine.
Possible side effects
Constipation, nausea and sleepiness are common side effects.
This is a short overview, not a full list. Read your pack’s patient leaflet and speak to a pharmacist about any concerns.
Common questions
What does 30/500 mean?
Each tablet contains 30 mg codeine phosphate and 500 mg paracetamol. It describes the ingredients, not how many tablets you should take.
What if I take too much?
Contact NHS 111 immediately, even if you feel well. Too much paracetamol can damage the liver and symptoms may be delayed.
